Sri Lanka's elephant country

Experience wild elephants, ancient landscapes and the natural heart of the Cultural Triangle

Minneriya is one of Sri Lanka's most rewarding wildlife destinations, combining open grasslands, forest, wetlands and an ancient reservoir within a landscape famous for wild Asian elephants.

At the centre of the region is Minneriya National Park, where elephants, deer, buffalo, monkeys and abundant birdlife inhabit a varied landscape surrounding the historic Minneriya Tank.

During suitable seasonal conditions, elephants gather around the reservoir and surrounding grasslands in impressive numbers. Minneriya also sits close to Kaudulla, Hurulu Eco Park, Habarana, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, making it an ideal wildlife addition to a Cultural Triangle journey.

Best Time to Visit

Planning the best time for your Minneriya safari

Minneriya can be visited throughout the year, but elephant locations and wildlife conditions change with rainfall, water levels and seasonal movement between nearby habitats.

May – June

Drying landscapes

Conditions begin becoming drier and wildlife may increasingly use open areas and water sources around the region.

July – October

Prime elephant season

Traditionally an excellent period for elephant activity around Minneriya as dry conditions concentrate wildlife near water and feeding grounds.

November – April

Green season

Rain transforms the landscape and elephant movements may shift towards nearby parks and forest areas, while birdlife and vegetation can be particularly rewarding.

Travel Tip

Elephants move naturally between Minneriya, Kaudulla and surrounding habitats. A good safari plan should consider current wildlife locations rather than choosing a park only by name.
